The final month of the 2013 season is underway, and while there might be less suspense than we'd prefer with regards to the postseason field -- nine teams currently have at least a 95 percent chance of playing into October according to the Baseball Prospectus Playoff Odds -- that doesn't mean there's a shortage of stories to follow in September. Here's a selection of the month's top 10 storylines:
Top 10 September storylines to watch
Although the NFL season starts on Thursday night, let us not forget that entering the final month of the MLB season, the Division and Wild Card races are really going to start heating up. This is especially true in the American League, where seven teams are currently within five games of a Wild Card spot. The Red Sox hold a 5.5-game lead in the AL East over Tampa Bay but the Rays, Orioles (7.5 GB) and Yankees (8 GB) could get hot at any time. Oakland and Texas are currently tied for first in the AL West in a race that will most likely come down to the final weekend of the regular season. The NL Central (arguably the most competitive division in baseball) has three teams separated by 3.5 games while the Pittsburgh Pirates are trying to get back to the postseason for the first time since 1992. It should be a great finish to the regular season. Stay tuned.
